Site Survey
Residential car chargers (level 2) can draw a lot of power and require your home to have 200 amp service. During a site survery your home’s electrical systems need to be assessed to determine if it is large enough to handle that amount of electrical load. We also need to check if with the electricity supplier, transformer capacity & for your home even while your car charges at full load. Your charger requires your electrical panel to have a free spot to install a dedicated 2 pole circuit breaker. If your home doesn’t meet the requirements you’ll need to upgrade your panel or use a load monitoring solution.
Choosing An Installation Site
When it comes to installing an EV charger, one of the great advantages is the flexibility of location. Whether you want the charging unit inside your garage or mounted outside, you have the freedom to choose the spot that’s most convenient for you. Generally, a location inside the garage close to the electrical panel is the preferred option for many homeowners due to ease of wiring and protection from the elements. Our team is here to offer guidance and expertise to help determine the most practical and effective location for your charger.
Mounting EV Charger & Wiring
The installation process for an EV charger involves planning the most efficient route from your electrical panel to the charger’s location. This takes into account the distance and any obstacles in the path. We then install a protective conduit along this route, through which the electrical wire is run. This wire, protected by the conduit, carries the electrical current from your panel to the EV charger. After securely connecting one end of the wire to a dedicated breaker in your panel and the other to your EV charger, we conduct a thorough testing process to ensure everything functions correctly. Working with electrical systems requires expertise and safety precautions, which is why it’s essential to have such work handled by licensed professionals.
Do I Need An EV Car Charger?
- Convenience: One of the major advantages of home charging is the sheer convenience it offers. Instead of relying on public charging stations, you can charge your electric vehicle overnight while you sleep, much like charging a mobile phone.
- Availability of Public Infrastructure: Depending on where you live, public charging infrastructure might be less available, making home charging a more reliable option.
- Cost and ROI: The upfront cost of installing an EV charger at home can be offset over time by the savings from not using gasoline. Moreover, having an EV charger can increase your property’s value, offering a solid return on investment (ROI).
- Amortization: If you drive your EV frequently or for long distances, having a home charger means you’ll be charging more often, spreading out the initial cost of the charger over a higher number of uses.
- Existing Home Infrastructure: If your home already has a 200-amp electrical service, installing an EV charger can be a more straightforward process, as your electrical system is already equipped to handle the additional load.
